Pambazuka, Yash

YASH TANDON: Today we live in a world of kleptocratic capitalism. Some “left” intellectuals call it “financialised capitalism” - finance is king; production takes a second place. But this term is limited to only its predominant economic characteristic. In essence, in political-economic terms, kleptocratic capitalism is a system of economic production and exchange based on fictitious wealth without going through production of real wealth and political governance controlled by “looters and daytime robbers”. It is “rent seeking” by the rich nations; and within each nation by the rich economic and power elite. This creates at the opposite polar end the dispossession and disempowerment of the masses of the people.

We have no youth leaders

Mail & Guardian, Sandile Memela

Today’s young leaders are largely, arrogant, self-obsessed and concerned with position and power.

There are far too few young leaders who seem to be committed to meaningful change that will transform the status quo.

In Dar like Kenya, the generational leap is taking place

The East African, Elsie Eyakuze

The old guard must find a way to cede to the new generation in intellectual and cultural terms as well as physical. It has already started in the North of the Continent — the Arab Spring is just as much a cultural and generational rebellion as it is a political one.

... what about Mozambique..?... These governments renounced ideas of planned transformation of the colonial relations and embraced neoliberalism with gusto. This meant that in Mozambique the structures of the popular organs such as the women, youth, workers and peasants were weakened. International and western non-governmental organisations invaded the rural communities while the working people were denied the basic democratic rights for collective bargaining and industrial democracy. Journalists who attempted to expose the rampant corruption at the top leadership were warned, and one was killed in order to send a message that there should be no opposition to the privatisation of liberation.

Know your Africa, just watch Big Brother

Mail & Guardian, Jacqueline Muna Musiitwa

Lusophones (Angolans and Mozambicans) are wild partiers, as can be the Tanzanians.

The show reflects a view of Africa we sometimes refuse to admit exists and I hope that continues. type='text'>The Inequality Wildcard

Project Syndicate, Kenneth Rogoff

What is clear is that inequality is not just a long-term issue. Concerns about the impact of income inequality are already constraining fiscal and monetary policy in developed and developing countries alike as they attempt to extricate themselves from the hyper-stimulative policies adopted during the financial crisis.

More importantly, it is very likely that countries’ abilities to navigate the rising social tensions generated by gaping inequality could separate the winners and losers in the next round of globalization. Inequality is the big wildcard in the next decade of global growth, and not just in North Africa.

A skimming flight over Mozambican memory

Pambazuka news, Review of ‘Memórias em Vôo Rasante’ (The memoirs of Jacinto Veloso) , Wilson Gomes de Almeida

Another election, another Museveni term?

Mail & Guardian, Tinyiko Sam Maluleke

“We would rather be ruled by a python whose stomach is so full he can hardly move so he can do no more damage than to open the floodgates for a new pack of wild dogs every five years,” he concluded. Mulembwe.

The Banana Republic — coming soon to a home near you

Mail & Guardian, Siyabonga Ntshingila
The very idea that corruption could become a culture, be the way things are done, the norm.
